Navdeep Singh Career

As we mentioned above Navdeep is a professional Para athlete and his game is Javelin throw his category is F41.

Navdeep was interested in sports from the very start but he was not included in games because of his short height by his teachers.

But Navdeep says this is what inspires an athlete like him most because when people think you are nothing and then you show them your power it has a different feel.

His father introduced him to wrestling and after that, he started his training in wrestling but because of back pain he quit it and moved towards javelin.

Navdeep Singh’s training and struggles

In the beginning, Navdeep came to Delhi for training. He says that he used to go to training and then for his meal and from there he used to go to direct in his room because it was a whole new atmosphere for him he wasn’t used to it and it was his first time in a big city.

Navdeep also adds that Delhi is a fast city and it took time to get him adjusted.

Navdeep used to spend time in his room mostly after training because people used to tease him and it was a normal thing but it increased in Delhi and people should stop this and change this culture of mocking others’ disability.

After his celebration now Navdeep is in Gujarat for his further training.

Struggles a normal family faces and the government help

Navdeep says it’s expensive to train in the beginning people can’t afford it easily for example Jawline which is used for professional training costs 1 lakh to 1.25 lakhs approx. and shoes they use cost 16000 to 18000 so overall it is hard for a lower and middle class family to do so much.

Furthermore, Navdeep adds that the government is helping more and more now. there are grounds and government coaches who train newcomers.

Singh adds that they themselves get massagers and a physio team who take care of them and govt. is providing them with schemes that help players.

Controversy which upgraded Navdeep’s silver into gold

Javelin throw games were held on the very last day. Navdeep started his first throw but unfortunately, it was a foul because he touched the line that he was not supposed to touch after that he stood up, drank water got relaxed, he calmed down because he had 5 more chances so it was alright.

In the second term, he threw his javelin approximately 46 meters but Navdeep was not able to see it so he went to his coach to ask his coach was happy with his performance because his average in training was 42 and 43 meters so he was happy that Navdeep is doing so well in the ground.

After that in his 3rd attempt, he threw the javelin around 47.32 meters and in the next term, it was again a foul after that he threw approx. 46 meters and ended his term with a foul.

Although Navdeep did his personal best, Iranian player Sadegh Beit Sayah threw his javelin 47.65 meters which was also a world record and he won the gold medal.

After this mind-blowing performance, Sadegh did some unusual and against the rules activity so he was disqualified and in a dramatic twist, Navdeep got his medal upgraded from silver medal to gold medal. This gold medal is the first-ever gold for India in this category.

Grand celebration and welcome

when asked to Navdeep how he celebrated his victory he said he was just sitting in his room quite nothing much but from Navdeep’s family to his village no one was quiet at all there was an atmosphere of happiness all around.

On 10 September when athletes landed in India, they were all given a wonderful welcome.

Navdeep Singh’s best throw

In the Paralympic, Navdeep did his best throw with 47.32 meters which not only broke his personal records but also world record. That situation was a dilemma he says in the podcast that it’s just a different kind of feeling it just can’t be expressed through words your mind just doesn’t work and your legs just on their own your mind becomes senseless but still he managed his best throw.

Moreover, he adds that this distance was average and his one arm is gonna be more long distance in his next throws.

Although an Iranian player broke this record in this same tournament he was disqualified due to activities against sports rules.

Navdeep’s service and post

Navdeep plays for India on international levels and as we know to let players move forward and inspire them, the government gives government jobs via sports quota.

With this facility, Navdeep works as an income tax officer and right now his duty is in Bangalore.

Navdeep says that he gets support from his department also and they say to Navdeep to bring glory to the nation and there is no pressure from the department whenever it’s a tournament he gets full time for his practice.

Meeting with PM Narendra Modi

After the tournament when all athletes returned to India PM Modi personally met them he not only patted the players on the back but also encouraged them to do better.

Viral videos of Navdeep Singh

Two videos of Navdeep went viral in the first video Navdeep was unable to see in his second throw what the distance that his javelin covered so he went to his coach and asked him and when coach told him he was shocked because of training his average distance was 42 and 43 meters so he said to his coach ‘Khao maa kasam’ (swear to mother) and second video was when Navdeep threw his best throw till now and abused in local language.

People went crazy about it and compared him to Virat Kohli saying he is Virat 2.0 and he is Delhi boy and this and that.

This video was on everyone’s mobile even the PM also teased Navdeep about it.

Reacting to it Navdeep says it was his aggression. But surely it was his fault he shouldn’t have used this language, it just came out of his mouth.

Conclusion

Navdeep was a premature child and it took 2 years to understand his parents about his dwarfism. Navdeep says in early life he used to face a lot but with time it became his strength. It was hard in the beginning but now he is happy today when he thinks about those times it feels like nothing.

He came to sports for jobs he thought after his job he would leave sports but once he met an Arjun Awardee it made him passionate about Jawline.
